Calamus is native to northern Europe and Asia.
It is extracted from fresh or dried roots by steam distillation.

- The root of this plant is used in herbal medicine for the treatment of nervous complaints, vertigo, headaches and dysentery.
- This oil should not be used in aromatherapy.
- Oral ingestion of calamus oil can cause convulsions and liver and kidney damage.
