
Geranium Essential Oil
Pelargonium graveolens
Properties:
Geranium essential oil is colourless, but has a tinge of light green colour to it. It has a watery viscosity.
Origin:
It originated from South Africa, as well as Reunion, Madagascar, Egypt and Morocco.
Extraction Method:
The leaves and stalks are used for extraction and is extracted using steam distillation.
Chemical composition:
A-pinene, myrcene, limonene, menthone, linalool, geranyl acetate, citronellol, geraniol and geranyl butyrate.
Therapeutic properties:
Astringent, haemostatic, diuretic, antiseptic, anti-depressant, tonic, antibiotic, anti-spasmodic and as an anti-infectious agent.
Uses:
Geranium oil can be used to help in the treatment of:
- acne
- bruises
- burns
- cuts
- dermatitis
- eczema
- hemorrhoids
- lice
- mosquito repellant
- ringworm
- ulcers
- breast engorgement
- edema
- poor circulation
- sore throat
- tonsillitis
- PMS
- menopausal problems
- stress
- neuralgia
Precautions:
- Geranium oil does not cause any side effects, since it is non-toxic, non-irritant and generally non-sensitizing, yet can cause sensitivity in some people and due to the fact that it balances the hormonal system.
- Avoid using it during pregnancy.
Blends well with:
Angelica, Basil, Bergamot, Clary-sage, Fennel, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Neroli.
